I would like to take this opportunity to remind all our clubs of our agreement as a management team.
Which is:
To keep St Helens and Merseyside a safe and fun environment for all our children to learn and play Rugby league.
To keep this promise we all have to ensure that our new coaches (recently attended a level one or level two course) complete a DBS and attend a SPC course. Then and only then will they receive their coaching badge and be eligible to coach within our community.
As I deliver both the coaching courses and the Safeguarding courses in our area, it is obvious that this is not happening. Therefore as a management team we are failing in our promise.
I also know of some individuals who are volunteering within our community clubs who are also without DBS and SPC validity.
In light of recent events in other sports, I would like to propose an amnesty where we sort out our requirements within the next few weeks so at the beginning of next season all our coaches and volunteers within our community are all covered.
I am on the other end of the phone to arrange DBS verification evenings / days and will put on as many SPC courses that our area needs to ensure we reach our goal. All I need is your buy in and assistance to start afresh this 2017 season.

Once the start of the season is upon us, I will use my role as a Safeguarding ambassador for the RFL to start to whistle blow back to the RFL’s safeguarding team any names that I know throughout St Helens and Merseyside operating without being fully vetted and qualified.
I see this as my duty of care to all involved in our sport within our community and make no apology should I need to action this come February.
