TO mark one year since courageous Harrison Ledsham lost his battle with bone cancer, a memorial day has been organised by his best friend.
Haydock High pupil Harrison captured the hearts of St Helens while he bravely fought the disease which he was diagnosed with in 2014.
The former Blackbrook Royals rugby junior player passed away on May 14 last year leading to an outpouring of tributes and condolences to parents Paul and Karen.
Harrison, from Haydock, led Saints out at Langtree Park ahead of their World Club Challenge clash with South Sydney Rabbitohs.
And to celebrate his life best friend Mackenzie Maddison, who attended Legh Vale Primary School with him decided to organise an event in his honour.
From there the idea grew with the an event to celebrate Harrison’s life to be held at the rugby club he used to play.
With raffles, stalls, games and a bouncy castle among the entertainment, a memorial match will also take place involving Harrison’s former teammates.
“It is a day to remember Harrison, I don’t want it to be a sad day although I am sure there will be tears,” said Bev, Mackenzie’s mum.
“It is to celebrate his life although it is marking a sad occasion. There will be a memorial rugby match played by the team he played with before he was diagnosed. He was in the under 11s and they are the under 13s now.
“We have had a fabulous response with lots of donations from the community. He was so well-loved it has snowballed and we have had so much help and we’re hoping lots of people will come along.
“All of the donations will go to cancer research. Haydock High and a lot of his friends will come along and hopefully some Saints players.”
The day will run from 10am to 2pm on Sunday, May 15, the weekend marking one year since Harrison’s passing. Admission will be free.
